The manufacturing and trade of printed calico made the fortune of Baron Oberkampf, who transformed its modest factory in Jouy-en-Josas (which he founded in 1760) into a flourishing firm. Its calico, printed with country scenes, characters or floral motives, used to have a great success, competing with the traditional material (wool andsilk) that wre used for clothes or the decoration of the furniture. These motives still inspire contemporary designers, over one hundred years after Oberkampf's factory has closed.
