From 15 April to 20 July 2008.
A true artistic genius, Camille Claudel was however better known for her passionate relationship with the sculptor Auguste Rodin than for her work. The originality and intensity of her sculptures have since won her universal recognition as an artist...
The Musée Rodin is presenting a retrospective of Camille Claudel’s work with over 80 marble, terracotta, plaster, onyx and bronze sculptures as well as engravings and drawings.
Camille Claudel was Rodin’s lover, student and acolyte. The celebrated sculptor was twenty years her senior. While she made no secret of Rodin’s influence on her work, it would seem that the opposite was also true, to the point that it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between their respective sculptures.
The exhibition explores this intriguing connection as well as the work of Camille Claudel and her place in the artistic movement of the late 19th century.
This fascinating retrospective of Camille Claudel’s masterpieces draws visitors into the surging creativity of her artistic work. A must-see.

Description :
The Rodin museum is devoting a unique retrospective to Camille Claudel. This exhibition brings together the fundamentals of the artist’s work with more than 80 marble, terracotta, plaster, onyx and bronze sculptures, as well as ten or so engravings and drawings from both public and private collections. Some documents like the correspondance between Rodin and Camille Claudel and photography from this period, complete the ensemble. This retrospective once again throws light on the artistic journey punctuated by the masterpieces of an artist who is today better known for her private life than for her own creations. After being judged for a long time with reference to Rodin, Camille Claudel’s art appeared deeply original, intense and radiant. This exhibition aims to apprehend the work of this revolutionary outside of the passion which united her with Rodin. Camille Claudel’s work is known for being marked by Rodin’s influence. The master largely influenced the student. The opposite is also true, to such an extent that it is sometimes difficult to determine to whom the work belongs. However, Camille Claudel’s work also testifies an incredible creative power. At the exhibition you can discover or rediscover the works that defined the sculptor’s reputation: The Waltz, where a pair of dancers passionately intertwined appear to be carried off by a whirlpool; The Age of Maturity, autobiographic work symbolic of her break up with Rodin; Wave or Les Causeuses, representative examples of sculptures where Camille Claudel freed herself from the master to realise more personal works, strongly influenced by Art Deco and Japonism. Some works are presented to the public for the first time like the plaster of the Niobide Blessée, laid down by the French State in the Bejaia Museum in Algeria, in 1935, or even the little terracotta studies deriving from the museum’s collections and recently reattributed to Camille Claudel.
